How secure is connecting your laptop to Bluetooth DUN?

I use a Bluetooth DUN connection to tether my Motorola Droid’s 3G connection to my MACBOOK. Is it safe to access secure sites using this service? Can the Bluetooth DUN connection be intercepted just like a regular wifi connection? Can it be intercepted by another Bluetooth user, and if so can that be detected?

There is a remote possibility of someone being able to sniff the packets between your laptop and phone. However as is the case with wifi, that doesn’t actually matter much.

When you use a secure site communication is protected between your computer and that site. Even if someone manages to listen in on the communications between your computer and the site, they will gain little or no information. (They can know you visited the site and they can gain a little information about what you did there by the amount of traffic they see.)

There are some interesting cases where an attacker is able to modify the traffic between your computer and the other site, specifically if they can redirect you to their own version of the site and have a certificate for the site they’re claiming to be. However in all cases, for this to work either you or the site have bigger things to worry about.
