***WBOC EXCLUSIVE***
Reported by Eve Tannery
DOVER -- A counselor taken hostage and raped at a Delaware Correctional Center finally tells her story. After almost two months, the counselor taken hostage by inmate Scott Miller last month at a prison near Smyrna was finally able to talk to investigators Wednesday, as part of the Department of Correction's internal investigation.
Officials at the Department of Correction confirmed they interviewed the counselor Wednesday morning. For a while, they've said her interview was the missing piece of the puzzle in their investigation.
Since the July 12th incident, the counselor's attorneys have said her doctors wouldn't let her speak to investigators because of medical concerns. Attorneys say doctors didn't want her to have to re-live the nightmare she went through. The counselor's mother told WBOC that the doctors gave the counselor clearance to talk almost two weeks ago. Officials at the Department of Correction say they can't comment on the details of the morning interview. But, they say it was very successful.
"We understand that it was very difficult for her to talk about the incident of July 12," said Department of Correction Spokeswoman, Beth Welch. "She was very cooperative and gracious, and we were very appreciative of her time today," she said.
Welch tells us that the internal affairs team will now determine what follow-up or additional interviews need to be made. She says there's no time frame for how long their investigation will take. But, she says they hope to wrap it up as soon as possible.
Until recently, there were two investigations into the hostage incident going on at the same time. Delaware State Police wrapped their investigation last Friday. They were able to interview the counselor the night of the incident. The Delaware State Police Report is now in the hands of the Attorney General's office for review, and a final report is expected by the end of the month.
