DOVER - An inmate in the custody of the state Department of Correction escaped Tuesday morning. According to DOC, he is considered dangerous.
If the inmate is spotted, the public is strongly urged not to approach him and to contact a local police agency.
At approximately 7:30 a.m., a DOC court and transportation unit was transporting Myron D. Price, 28, of Ellendale, and 13 other inmates from the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown to Kent County Superior Court in Dover for trial.
When correctional officers opened the van door to transfer the inmate into the courthouse, the inmate ran. DOC said one officer gave chase but was unable to apprehend the inmate. The other officer remained behind as there were other inmates in the van. The officers immediately called for assistance.
DOC said Price broke a window to enter the basement of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Dover. Once inside, DOC said Price dumped his orange DOC jumpsuit and changed into blue jeans, a cream colored shirt, a 3/4 length dark jacket and a black wool cap.
DOC said Price is believed to have cut himself on broken glass at the church.
Shortly after the escape, a 1990 white Ford Econoline van was reported stolen from a construction site on East Loockerman Street, across from City Hall in Dover. DOC said the van was discovered about 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Del. 16 and Del. 30 near Ellendale.
DOC activated its Correctional Emergency Response Team in an effort to locate the inmate. Dover Police and Delaware State police are assisting with search efforts.
According to the DOC, Price was serving an 8-year sentence for trafficking cocaine. He was to appear in court today the following outstanding charges: 5 counts of robbery 1st, 6 counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, 5 counts of wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, conspiracy 2nd, aggravated menacing and 2 counts of possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited.
He was being held on $950,000 cash only bail. DOC said Price is black, 5-foot-7 inches tall with medium skin. He has a scar on his nose and tattoos on his chest and upper arm. He was last wearing an orange DOC jumpsuit but may have taken that off.
